News and Communications

April 1, 2020

Dear VASD Families,

Finally, April has arrived! March 2020 will no doubt go down as the month our entire world changed. I hope you and your family are well and healthy.

I have so much to be grateful for! I’m grateful for our awesome teachers and support staff, for our technology wizards, for our food service staff who are doing phenomenal work providing breakfast and lunch to families in need and of course to our fabulous students and their families - you all. This is not easy for any of us. I find myself, as the dad of a Sugar Creek Kindergartner, really struggling at times with the uncertainty and the unrelenting pace of change and how I talk with my son about that. Parents and caregivers, it is especially important now to reach out to other trusted friends / caregivers / family members to check in.

As I have shared in previous communications to you, the VASD administrative team and I continue to prioritize the many items we need to communicate to our families. Our list today includes the following:

•Virtual learning continues to be underway following Spring Break! As a reminder, click here http://www.verona.k12.wi.us/district_departments/curriculum__instruction__assessment/virtual_learning to view a slideshow with general information about virtual learning and what your child will be experiencing, along with some frequently asked questions. You will be taken to a webpage, and simply scroll down the page to view the presentation. The continuity of instruction has been a major priority and at this time, we are working on building a weekly structure that will allow for plenty of virtual instruction, but also add a mix of professional development time (since late-start Mondays no longer exist), and family contact time.

•Summer School: We were set to launch the registration for summer school today, April 1st--we are holding on that, of course. We plan to make a decision if there will be summer school by the end of April, early May and will update you in the coming weeks.

•Meal Distribution: Free cold lunches and breakfasts continue to be available for all students age 18 and under on a grab-and-go basis. Students do NOT need to be present and ID numbers are not needed. At this time, we are aware that our meal distribution sites are not easily accessible to a small number of families, so please stay tuned for updates on how we will assist those families.
Meals are available at the following times and locations:
10:30-11:30am
•Harriet Park Shelter, 414 Mary Lou St, Verona
•Nakoma Heights Community Room, 4929 Chalet Gardens Rd, Fitchburg
•Stone Crest Apartments Community Room, 5673 King James Ct, Fitchburg

Noon - 1pm
•New Fountain Apartments tennis court area, 5401 Williamsburg Way, Fitchburg
•Hometown Junction Park, 101 W. Railroad St., Verona

In addition, please note there are many free food sites around Dane County:

•Families resource section:
The YMCA Madison West location and the YMCA Sun Prairie location are offering childcare for healthcare workers.

We know a lack of routine is difficult for many people. Here are some guidelines for families/students working from home to help with this transition:

•start your day similar to how you would on a regular school/work day.
•dress as you would to come to work/school.
•have a place to do school work free of distractions, such as a table or desk.
•take regular breaks, similar to transitioning between classes.

•Interested in donating to help those families and students in need during this crisis?: Click here to visit this fundraising page as online donations go to our Wildcat Family Fund to ensure ALL our students have equitable access to educational needs and basic life necessities during this challenging time.

•New High School Construction: At this time is still on schedule for substantial completion on June 5th. To date there have been no interruptions to supplies / materials or workforce.

If there is anything I can do for you or your family, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at the email address below. Please know my thoughts are with you and your family.

Kind regards,

Dean Gorrell – Superintendent
