This is the image for the news article titled Achieve 3000The comprehensive curriculum at Savanna Oaks is designed to prepare middle grade learners for a changing world. Today’s young people must be versed in skills and literacies that previous generations did not have to address. Some of the new literacies include digital, visual and disciplinary. In Wisconsin, disciplinary literacy is defined as the confluence of content knowledge, experiences, and skills merged with the ability to read, write, listen, speak, think critically and perform in a way that is meaningful within the context of a given field. Teaching reading strategies solely in language arts class is no longer sufficient. A literate school community now requires reading instruction in all content areas.

Achieve 3000 is a program used to extend reading instruction into all content areas. It is exclusively non-fiction reading. The articles used originally appeared in adult newspapers and magazines. Achieve re-writes the articles to meet the diverse Lexile levels of our readers. While learners do benefit from reading articles on their own, the greatest gains are seen when direct instruction is used. If a substitute is leading an Achieve lesson they are given support and coaching. School wide gains in Lexile have been both consistent and impressive using Achieve 3000. In contrast, R2S classes are designed to facilitate self-selected fiction reading. Readers are encouraged to read from a variety of genres and provided with the time to read. This commitment to creating lifelong readers is reflected in library circulation which was 10,000+ check outs in the 14/15 school year.
