January is our winter testing window and is the second time students in grades 6-8 will MAP test this year.

All testing occurs during your child’s House time.  MAP testing is one way that your child demonstrates how much she or he has grown in math and reading since the beginning of the school year.  These tests can be challenging because they are adaptive and problems and text does become more difficult when their responses are correct.

What can you do to help prepare your child for these tests?

  • Encourage your child to get a good night’s sleep.
  • See that they get a good breakfast on testing days.

  • Schedule medical appointment on non-testing days and help them to get to school on time.
  • Give them a purpose for taking the test (keep reading for suggestions on how to do this)

Let your child know that they have learned a lot already this year and that you expect them to work hard and do their best on these assessments – even if they find them challenging.  Share with them that you care how they do and look forward to seeing their results. Remind them of how much they’ve learned this year.  Tell them that this test is an opportunity for them to demonstrate to you, their teachers, and more importantly to themselves - how much they’ve grown in reading, math and problem solving.  If you have strategies that work to help you perform well on assessments or in challenging situations, please share them with your child.

Below is a schedule of testing for students in grades 6-8:

Grade 6    1/20 & 1/26
Grade 7    1/7 & 1/8  and 1/21 & 1/22
Grade 8    1/19 – 1/22
