This is the image for the news article titled Savanna Oaks Wins the Middle School Challenge for Summer Reading/Math ProgramEach summer many students across the nation experience summer slide, meaning they lose between 3-5 months of growth made during the previous school year if they aren’t reading or doing math over the summer. If they work really hard, by December these students may catch up to where they were when they left school the previous June. The cumulative effects of the summer slide accounts for most of the reading struggles students experience in middle school. If students read just five books over the summer and use math to solve real life problems (grocery shopping, finding the lowest price for something they want, baking or building something) they can beat the summer slide.

In addition, Badger Ridge and Savanna Oaks Middle Schools have, for the last three years, engaged in a competition to see which middle school has the most readers and mathematicians during the summer. Students from both schools complete a summer reading challenge form and submit it during the first few weeks of school. The form includes some high interest fiction and non-fiction titles, math websites and space for them to record all the books and websites they visited during the summer. Books read for local public library summer reading programs can be used for this competition as well.

The competition trophy is a “one of a kind” created in 2013 by former VAHS student Aidan Combs. It is a “Suessified” Abe Lincoln (Dr. Suess), marrying the famous images associated with a great reader and statesman and one of our nation's most prolific childrens’ writers. In its first year of competition the Summer Reading/Math Challenge trophy was won by Savanna Oaks, while the second year Badger Ridge won bragging rites as the "readingest" school. This year, the trophy returned to Savanna Oaks with credit going not only to the reading efforts of all Savanna Oaks students, but sixth graders in particular who turned in nearly 70% of the forms!

Congratulations to Savanna Oaks Middle School!
